Mount Hermon Conference Center is located in the Santa Cruz Mountains, eight miles north of the city of Santa Cruz, California. The conference center consists of approximately 440 acres including guest facilities and private homes, all situated in a heavily wooded mountain environment.
An existing redwood cabin, built around 1917 as a private summer vacation home, was donated to the conference center for guest lodging. The center wanted to replace the cabin with one that would represent the existing architectural style and floor plan and also re-use as much of the old growth redwood as possible. They also had a very restrictive budget for the project.
The replacement cabin includes 4 guest rooms And 3 baths on 2 levels and is approximately 1750 square feet. Much of the original redwood was planed and used as wainscot in the living areas. Old beams were used in the ceiling and for the mantel above the rock fireplace. An existing leaded-glass window was placed adjacent to the main entrance. Stained rough-sawn plywood and 1 x 3 batten strips were used on the exterior to match the look of the original cabin.
